well, we managed to fix stemshul’s big screen tv. it just took some perseverance to tweak it properly. we used the thx test screens on the fight club dvd to get an accurate display of colors. in the end, it came down to focusing the red, green, and blue crt tubes so that they all lined up. it still looks like the blue is off a tiny bit, but stemshul doesn’t mind, so i guess it will be ok.
with the tv calibrated, we decided it was time to go to best buy and pick up a 5.1 surround sound receiver. after getting it all set up, we watched tim burton’s batman and jurassic park. batman didn’t have much sound coming from the rear speakers. i’d imagine that is because it was made in 1989 when surround sound was not as widely used as it is today. jurassic park, however, had sound coming out of every orifice. it was very satisfying.

we helped stemshul move to his new place yesterday. it was an easy move and that is good, because moving mid-winter is cold. we had a slight mishap with the rear projection big screen tv. the front power button does not work and the colors are not aligned any more. we messed around with the three crt tubes, but only got it to look slightly better than what it was. there is this reddish haze around some of the edges. i found a site with good information about convergence calibration. if we can find the convergence controls, there may be a way to fix it without having it cost money. this is all assuming it is just misaligned from the move and not badly damaged. i hope i can fix it, otherwise the lord of the rings marathon may have to be put on hold. “no, not our preciousssss!”

| i bought a gamecube broadband adapter for the sole purpose of playing mario kart: double dash on a lan. when i finally got it working, i come to find out that i can’t pick my characters or kart for races. this is a monumental design flaw. never have i played a racing game where i can’t, at the very least, pick my car i’m driving. specifically in this game, it’s important to get the right characters and kart that suits the driving style i’m comfortable with. what i can’t figure out, is why it was done this way. there is no reason for it. i thought nintendo was trying to be the best video game company, but with stupid ideas like this, you will be the laughing stock of the entire video game community.

the extended edition dvd of the return of the king was released on tuesday. the new scenes are really cool. the saruman scene that christopher lee was pissed about getting cut, the boat scene, and my new favorite scene of the whole trilogy: the mouth of sauron. this scene isn’t really all that important but it’s so well done. it’s creepy and in my opinion, it should never have been cut.
now that the trilogy is complete on dvd, stemshul must acquire a surround sound system so that we can watch all three movies back to back (with a few taco breaks). 11 hours and 22 minutes, baby!
