that yellow bastard

i saw the sin city yesterday. it was quite harsh, but in a good way. aside from the unique visual style, which everyone seems to get hung-up on, it also has a quality story (or stories, i should say), as well as some bodacious performances from nick stahl, bruce willis, and benicio del toro.
the heinous nature of basin city creates the perfect backdrop for crime, corruption, and evil. there are a lot of disturbing things that happen in this city. a lot. we are talking death, dismemberment, cannabalism, prostitution, and pedophilia. it’s not pretty. it’s not meant to be. it is meant to give you a desperate world where only darkness can survive. there are no perfect, righteous characters here. each one has one flaw or another, but each of the three stories revolve around characters who attempt (and sometimes succeed) at redeeming themselves. no matter how bad things look on the surface, good still manages to triumph.
sin city is the kind of movie that most people will shrug off as being overly violent. good for them. i hope they can find comfort in their padded reality. for me, sin city was about honesty. brutal honesty. the kind that, nowadays, everyone replaces with a superficial façade.
