who will spearhead the invasion?

tim, tom, and dakotathey came from afar… to water their plants?

ok, maybe the aliens in war of the worlds were here to kill the human race also. it was hard to decipher what in the sam hill was going on. the aliens’ motivation couldn’t have been any more vague, but, then again, otherworldly domination is usually that way. i think the intention was to confuse the viewer, so that you wouldn’t dwell on the excess of plot holes.

it’s not all bad, though. the dark tone was perfect. i especially liked the selfishness of the survivors, and how they were willing to shoot eachother for a car. survival of the fittest is no more. now you just have to have more bullets than anyone else, which explains ammunition stockpiling.

if we break this movie down into three sections, it would look like this:

section 1the build-up (you’re dusted): we learn that tom cruise is a horrible father. aliens begin their attack. miles upon miles of mayhem.

section 2how to deal (with not being dusted): the shit has hit the fan and now it’s time for the cruise family to make their way toward boston. luckily, de plane didn’t land on de minivan.

section 3happy sappy (why wasn’t robbie dusted?): the ending is just a little too soft for such a hard movie. in a movie where the majority of the human race gets completely wiped out, i am left with a yearning for just one more character to be offed. or actually two. ah, just let the damn aliens win.
