this is a follow-up to yesterday’s post. a few more things need to be said on this matter.

i’d like to believe that the patriot act was written with the best intentions (i.e. the safety of the american people), and i’m confident that it was. problem is, once you give this power to the government, what’s to stop them from spying on people about anything?

i’ve seen various blog comments and message boards where people say things such as: “if you have nothing to hide, you don’t have anything to worry about.” this is a very dangerous statement to make, for obvious reasons. i can see where this thinking may come from, but it’s not at all in keeping with what is considered to be a free society.

everyone wants to be safe. everyone wants to wake up and not worry about being blown to smithereens. but nobody should ever want to give up their liberty for that security. and no one should ever have to.

you know how we can stop terrorism? you know how we can send a clear message that shows it doesn’t work?

we just have to stop being afraid.
