read this interesting article. it’s about how several states are pushing to raise the minimum wage. many states have already done so, because they’ve realized that the federal minimum wage of $5.15 / hour is not enough in today’s world. the best part is that it’s been $5.15 for the last 8 years! obviously, that’s ok, because there is no such thing as inflation. what is inflation? exactly.
i propose we enact a “maximum wage” where the big fat cat ceos can’t make more than $100,000 / year. commence whining… now! that’s not fair, right? i would have to agree. but i also think paying people shit wages is not fair either. life is nothing without balance. and to treat people like they are dirt is pretty ridiculous, in my opinion. aren’t we forgetting that most of the minimum wage earners are the ones who make/prepare our food? is that someone you really want to piss off? they are the ones we should be treating the best. otherwise we get hair and fingers in our food or we get bird flu or hepatitis.
oppononents of a higher minimum wage say it would create higher labor costs for businesses, and there would be less jobs because businesses wouldn’t be able to afford more workers. those are valid complaints.
based on that article, oregon seems like a great place to live for the working class. minimum wage there is $7.25 / hour with yearly adjustments for inflation. crazy! god forbid the rest of the country have that much common sense.
