we love the war

The county says the war on odor isn’t over yet.

Mrochek says he’s fighting a war against illegal aliens who are invading our country.

war is over

these quotes are from news articles, which have nothing to do with war. yet, it’s becoming commonplace to depict any conflict or daily struggle with sentiments of dire importance. as if fighting the stench from a sewage treatment facility is comparable to, say, stopping the nazis from annihilating the jews and taking over the world. i’m sure it smelled just as bad, though.

generally, when thinking about war, it could be assumed that a disagreement arises between two countries and they fight until one is victorious or one surrenders. lately, there aren’t many countries that want to go around throwing tantrums and fighting with other countries. too many nukes making the stakes too great. so instead we’ve had to reinvent what constitutes a war. we can actually have a war on anything we want. it’s great! drugs are bad. war on ‘em. terra got you down? war on it. extra-terrestrials taking all the jobs you don’t want to do anyway? war those aliens into the ground.

if war is in you, you’ll take it to your grave.
