weekend funsies

shamu

this past weekend was spent in san diego. we got there at about 2:30 on friday. it was decided that since our partners in crime would not be arriving until later in the evening, we would spend a few hours at the san diego zoo. we did just that. we saw everything from king cobras to polar bears. the best exhibit was the pandas. they seemed so unreal with their methodical eating of bamboo shoots. they are definitely from china.

after spending 2 hours and too much money on mediocre food, we decided to hit the highway in rush hour traffic, attempting to reach our camp site before sunset. yeah, right. we got to the campground to the unwelcoming sign of “campground closed until may 15, 2008.” time to go to plan b: panic. through numerous phone calls and an unfriendly conversation with the park ranger trying to get all the surfers out so he could shut it down for the day, we come to find out that the campground where the reservations were made was about a mile north. we got back on the highway and found it within 10 minutes. we set up camp and waited for our group to arrive several hours later.

we got up the next morning bright and early to the sound of a dad-gum crow squawking like he wished he were a rooster (i made a mental note to bring a bb gun next time). we paid 50 cents for a 5-minute hot shower and prepared for our trip to sea world. but first, we had to make a pit stop at a nearby kinko’s to print off our southwestern rapid rewards cards to save 20% on our sea world tickets. 20% off 5 tickets at $59 per ticket is worth a pit stop.

sea world was a blast. definitely worth the money. we spent 5-6 hours there and did pretty much everything we wanted. the highlights were the shamu show, journey to atlantis (roller coaster fun), the penguins, the dolphins, and the bat ray petting pool. the downside was when we went on shipwreck rapids and got absolutely soaked by the bastards paying a quarter to shoot us with water. luckily, we were leaving at that point and just needed to drive 45 minutes to slip into dry clothes.

sunday, we got up and went to the beach before we headed out of town.

it was a lot of fun. next time, we want to take daisy and just camp on the beach. that closed campground looked really cool. now that we’ve done the big stuff, we can just sit on the beach and drink coronas all day.
